Brooklyn-born pianist and keyboardist Jason Lindner has a style uniquely his own, drawing largely from New York’s unlimited variety of culture from around the world, with an intensely urban feel. Lindner began composing, arranging and performing in the late 80’s while attending Music and Art High School in Manhattan. He honorably mentored with bebop guru Barry Harris, harmonic master Chris Anderson (Herbie Hancock’s mentor), and other elders of the NY jazz community at the legendary University of the Streets, and continued on to play in Latin dance bands and jazz and hip hop groups before forming his own big band to feature new works. Ben Ratlif of the New York Times writes is “the rare big band that could withstand the peeling away of all its horns and reveal a superb rhythm section at its heart.” The Jason Lindner Big Band drew steady sold-out crowds weekly at Smalls for almost 10 years, releasing their studio debut on Chick Corea’s Stretch label, and their live follow-up double-disc on Anzic (JazzTimes’ Best of 2007), and is generally known to be one of the most important progressive jazz big bands to emerge in recent times. Jason Lindner is also an integral, vital part of other exciting bands and projects, including Meshell Ndegeocello, Claudia Acuña (longtime musical director and pianist), and Cuban Grammy-nominated drummer/composer Dafnis Prieto, and is currently at work recording his newest group, Now Vs Now.
